Karen Fenton 5km
Another good race under my belt. The karen fenton 5km is a tough course. I ran it in 2019 in good conditions in 17:16. I would reckon its about 40 seconds of a difference to the marina or newmarket 5km. This year it was very windy and i did a speed session in CIT on saturday morning so wasn't expecting anything on the day.
When i got to the start line Darragh Mulcahy was there so i was expecting him to win because he beat me over by 1min and 7 secs over 6km, 39 secs over 4 miles in county championships so i was very relaxed.
The race went off and no one wanted to take the lead so i took it and there was a few marshalls shouting to Darragh to use me as a wind breaker. So i started speeding up and slowing down and running in the gutters. This lasted for 3.5km and myself and Darragh ran side by side for a good bit.
Darragh made a break and ran on the right hand side of the race. I thought it wasn't a good idea to go with him because the next turn was left down hill. He probably made 10 sec gap to me. When we turned right down hill my plan was to just catch him on the second last hill and use that momentum to break him.
I catch up to him at the hill but someone shouted out to him and he saw me coming and upped the pace and took off again.
He finished 16 seconds of me in 16:38, I was second in 16:56. Happy with that result but felt i could have won.
